Avani C. Macaluso

Avani practices in all areas of intellectual property law, including patent, trademark and copyright litigation, counseling and procurement. She has managed and litigated highly complex cases developing various case strategies from the initial pleadings through trial and/or settlement negotiations, spanning a wide range of technical disciplines such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, textile manufacturing, biochemical processes, mechanical devices and various other technologies.
Avani is a licensed U.S. patent attorney who routinely prepares and prosecutes patent and trademark applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Her transactional practice includes conducting due diligence on IP portfolios, rendering freedom-to-operate and patentability opinions, generating IP valuations and landscape assessments, preparing petitions for inter partes review and drafting licensing agreements. Her combined litigation and prosecution experience offer a unique and comprehensive perspective to clients, by forecasting long-term legal strategies that advance business objectives with a focus on enhanced profitability and return on investment.
As part of her commitment to the community, Avani was recognized by the National Immigration Justice Center (NIJC) as a Rising Star in 2015 for her work securing asylum in the U.S. for her pro bono clients.
Avani received her B.S. in biochemistry and B.A. in chemistry, both cum laude, from North Carolina State University in 2000. She received her J.D. from DePaul University College of Law in 2003. She is a member of the Illinois bar, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
